I love Christmas, really, I do.

Yule Horror
by H. P. Lovecraft

There is snow on the ground,
And the valleys are cold,
And a midnight profound
Blackly squats o’er the wold;
But a light on the hilltops half-seen hints of feastings un- hallowed and old.

There is death in the clouds,
There is fear in the night,
For the dead in their shrouds
Hail the sin’s turning flight.
And chant wild in the woods as they dance round a Yule- altar fungous and white.

To no gale of Earth’s kind
Sways the forest of oak,
Where the sick boughs entwined
By mad mistletoes choke,
For these pow’rs are the pow’rs of the dark, from the graves of the lost Druid-folk.

New York Governor Eliot Spitzer has raised the white flag on his efforts to issue drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants.

Reuters has this report, AP this one, and the NY Post chimes in here. As much as this was a New York proposal and collapse, the underlying issue is here to stay in the 2008 Presidential race.

“But I DID stay in Room 1408 last night…”
Synopsis: Mike Enslin (John Cusack) is a disillusioned writer who specializes in reviewing supposedly haunted bed-and-breakfasts. He spends his nights in hotel rooms where vicious murders occurred and feels more certain than ever that there is no afterlife, no haunts, no spectres or spooks. Then, one day while reviewing potential haunted rooms he receives a postcard for the Dolphin Hotel in New York City, reading, “Don’t go into room 1408!”

Naturally, Enslin decides to enter the haunted room against the wishes of the hotel manager (Samuel L. Jackson) … “I have had enough of the m*****-f***ing evil rooms in my m*****-f****** hotel!” (bet you didn’t see that one coming). Evil happenings ensue.

Update – the Pens have confirmed the recall and the demotion of Kennedy, and they have also sent down defenseman Alain Nasreddine, although he has until noon tomorrow to clear waivers.  These moves leave the Pens with 22 players filling 23 roster slots.

The Times-Leader reports that the Penguins have called up right-handed defenseman Kris Letang from their affiliate Wilkes Barre-Scranton of the AHL.

Thompson earns NRLC endorsement November 13, 2007

Official Statement (PDF)

With much fuller background courtesy of Erick @ Redstate, Fred Thompson has secured the endorsement of the National Right to Life Committee.  Erick’s post in particular addresses some of the background surrounding the jockeying by other campaigns trying to derail the endorsement.

Erick notes the importance of the endorsement as an outside-the-beltway organization:

The NRLC endorsement is, in fact, one of the very few endorsements a candidate will get that cannot be characterized as “inside the beltway,” despite what some of the other campaigns would have you believe. NRLC has been successful because it is a very grassroots organization and its endorsements are made based on the grassroots leadership in each of the 50 states, not from a small group sitting inside the beltway.

Pens tie in 3rd, but lose to Devils 3-2 November 12, 2007

Last Place in the Atlantic was on the line… win and the Pens put themselves three up on New Jersey, lose and the Devils jumped the Pens, leaving the Pens in last by a point.

The Pens spotted the Devils two goals in the first, then clawed their way back with one in the 2nd and one in the third to tie it at 2-2, but allowed the deciding goal with five minutes to go in regulation on a 3 on 2 rush by the Devils after Georges Laraque sent a blind pass out from behind the Devils net – sending Jersey away as no Pen was near the pass. It didn’t matter that the tide in the game had turned towards Pittsburgh’s direction, one mistake was enough for the Devils to get the two points.

Control PC Remotely with CrossLoop November 12, 2007

Great post over at LifeHacker.com detailing how to created a VNC using PC-based ‘CrossLoop’. I’m going to give this a try with my own home network. It requires that someone be on both ends of the connection, so this is probably best to use if you’re the designated ‘computer person’ in your family, and need to fix a PC remotely.

Title fight all but over with Johnson’s 4th win in a row November 12, 2007

Hendrick driver Jimmie Johnson won his fourth race in a row, and tenth on the season, extending his point lead to 86 points over teammate Jeff Gordon with one race to go. All Johnson has to do to clinch his 2nd title in a row is finish 18th or better in Homestead. The race at Phoenix saw him take the lead for the final time from Martin Truex Jr, after Truex had stayed out on the last yellow flag while most every other driver, including Johnson, pitted. Truex could not hold off Johnson, and several others, falling to the lower half of the top-10 by race’s end.

With apologies to Kope, this was one of those games. First place in the AFC North was on the line, and for a time, it looked like the Browns were going to forge a 1st place tie, but then the 2nd half had to be played…
